The Barnes Foundation is an art collection and educational institution that promotes art and horticulture appreciation. The art collection was previously housed in Merion and was relocated in 2012 to a new building on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Barnes Foundation arboretum remains in Merion, where it is proposed to be maintained as part of a long-term educational affiliation agreement with Saint Joseph’s University. Albert C. Barnes founded The Barnes in 1922 after making his fortune co-developing Argyrol, an antiseptic silver compound used to treat gonorrhoea and inflammations of the eye, ear, nose, and throat. He sold his company, the A.C. Barnes Company, just months before the 1929 stock market crash. Today, the foundation owns over 4,000 objects, including over 900 paintings, valued at approximately $25 billion. The collection primarily consists of works by Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modernist masters. Still, it also contains many other paintings by leading European and American artists, as well as African art, antiquities from China, Egypt, and Greece, and Native American art.
